A newly renovated bathroom enhances day to day living by providing a perfectly functional and organised area that becomes a spa like oasis in the comfort of home. It is an ideal way to improve interior design while adding value to the home. Though, unless you have the luxury of a large bathroom, it can be a challenging room to renovate. We have all paged through home magazines, scrolled through Pinterest and looked in awe upon ever so spacious bathrooms which in many cases are larger than the average sized bedroom.

Not all homes have a large bathroom space to work with, most containing two modest sized bathrooms, being the main bathroom and ensuite. Though, utilising a few choice selections and with some careful planning, homeowners can create a bathroom that is both functional and fabulous regardless how small.

Here are our tips for renovating small bathrooms without forgoing function or design.

Vanities

A wall hung vanity creates the illusion of space by showing off more floor area. This works exceptionally well with the use of larger sized floor tiles and feature floors. The options for wall hung vanities are seemingly endless today; single bowl, double bowl, drawers only, or a combination of cupboards and drawers. Large drawers are perfect for keeping makeup and toiletries neat and tidy as they simply pull out and your selection awaits, avoiding having to rummage to the back of the cupboard to get to what you want. Depending on your taste, you can choose a bold colour vanity to stand out to be the feature of the bathroom or choose a white or more neutral colour to blend into the wall tiles. Custom made vanities are the ideal way to make the most of every inch of bathroom space, in the exact colour and finish with the storage options you prefer. Custom made vanities are surprisingly similar in price to what is available in store.

Mirrors

Mirrors have long been used to create the illusion of a larger space. A mirror is a necessity for any bathroom, though using a large, strategically placed mirror will enhance light and and sense of space within the room. Vertical mirrors create an illusion of height, whereas horizontal create the illusion of width. A large mirror, be it round or rectangular, is a fantastic way to add the illusion of space. Though, it must be practical and set at a height that all family members can use comfortably. Recessed mirrored shaving cabinets offer not only a large mirror but also the addition of extra storage space for your toiletries. These shaving cabinets are recessed into the wall to create a sleek finish that does not crowd the basin area.

Niches

Niches are the perfect way to effectively use wall space without cluttering with protruding shelves. They can be tiled with the same size and coloured wall tiles to blend into the wall space or they can be tiled with a contrast tile and be lit with a down light or strip light to create an amazing feature. Used in the shower, they avoid scrapes and head bumps on protruding shelves and footrests. When positioned above a bath and lit with LED strip lighting, they become a fantanstic feature.

Natural Lighting & Colour Scheme

Small bathrooms benefit from light to enhance the appearance of space. The amount of natural light a bathroom receives has an enormous effect on its colour scheme. White and lighter colour neutrals are usually the best for smaller spaces. Though if the bathroom contains a large window or has a skylight, a slightly darker colour scheme may be considered. Typically using darker coloured tiles on both the wall and the floor in a smaller bathroom can make the room feel oppressive and appear even smaller. That doesn’t mean you have to forego a bit of bold if that’s your style. A bold coloured vanity set on a white wall makes for a beautiful focal point, or for a more striking design, a feature floor or a single feature wall both create a stunning feature.

Bathtubs & Shower Recesses

Opting for either a built in bath or free standing bath is a choice best made along with the advice from your renovator. Both types of baths are available in a variety of sizes. The shower recess can be created to suit your area and your preferences. Some prefer a larger shower and smaller bath, others a small shower and a larger bath. Where your plumbing is currently, whether you have the budget to move it should need be, and placement of the toilet, shower and vanity all needs to be taken into consideration.

Toilet suites

A back to wall close coupled toilet suite blends into the wall perfectly or if the budget allows, an in-wall cistern completely hides the cistern creating a seamless finish that enhances the sense of space.
