Kitchen Trends 2019/2020 – popular designs, selections and inclusions chosen by homeowners.

When renovating a kitchen, there are many decisions to be made. Layout, cabinet door finish, benchtop material, handles or handleless, what type of oven and in which finish, what size sink and which tap is best? These are just a few of the questions homeowners ask themselves when renovating their kitchen. The list does seem to be never ending and the options from which to choose are wide and varied. We share the most popular designs and inclusions chosen by our customers for their kitchens.

Islands and peninsula islands

Without doubt, kitchen islands are high on the wish list of homeowners. Kitchen islands not only look fantastic, they provide extra cupboards for storage, benchtop work space and an informal dining area that is perfect for place to entertaining guests whilst cooking. Though, not all kitchens have space available to enable a kitchen island in its layout. This is where peninsula islands are a popular choice. See our article on Kitchen Peninsula Islands.

Cabinet style & finish

Shaker cabinets have become increasingly popular as they suit all styles of kitchens, contemporary and traditional alike. They are a timeless design and look amazing in the kitchen no matter what colour is chosen. Though, the popular cabinet colour for shaker cabinets is usually white.

Matt cabinets have become more popular with the new fingerprint resistant finishes available. Matt cabinets work well with both shaker or flat profile cabinet doors and while they suit any kitchen style kitchen, when used on a flat panel, create a stunning modern and minimalist design.

Bulkheads are so frequently requested they are considered to be a standard inclusion in kitchens today. These close the gap between the top of the wall cabinets and the ceiling creating a seamless finish and avoids having to clean on top of the cupboards.

Splashbacks

Tiled splashbacks have made a come back in kitchens. Where once the glass splashback was commonly the preferred choice, homeowners are turning again to tiles. Patterned tiles, subway tiles and intricate tiling such as the timeless classic herringbone pattern all look amazing in the kitchen and become a feature creating depth and character.

Engineered stone splashbacks with stone benchtops are another popular choice which is no surprise at all with the designs available. Engineered stone perfectly imitates natural stone such as marble with its gorgeous veins and does not require annual sealing or special cleaners that natural stone requires.

Cooktops

When homeowners are selecting either to use gas or electric cooktops it usually comes down to two things. Firstly, personal preference. Some prefer to steer clear of gas due to safety. Secondly, if gas is readily available in the street or if there is a space available outside for gas bottles that will not be an eyesore. Though when choosing an electric cooktop, induction technology wins hands down. Induction cooktops heat and cool immediately just like gas. They bring pots to a boil quicker than gas. They are cooler to the touch (though glass will heat up) and have no open flame which makes them safer than gas. See our article on Induction Cooktops.

Stainless steel appliances are still by far the most popular finish for all appliances. There are a greater range of appliances available in stainless steel and it works well with all kitchen designs and colour schemes.

Lighting

Undercabinet lighting is extremely popular inclusion as it provides a light without shadows when working on the bench area directly under wall cabinets. In addition and just as importantly, undercabinet lighting is a stunning feature light that highlights the splashback and acts as soft ambient light to use alone at night when meal time is finished.

Pendant lights are an ideal addition to the kitchen when placed above either an island or peninsula island. They act as a target illumination over the island and are truly a stunning decorative choice.
