Common bathroom renovation mistakes & how to avoid them.
Renovating your home is an exciting process that comes with the pressure and responsibity of making decisions that will last for decades. Follow these tips to ensure your bathroom renovation results in you having your dream bathroom.
Get ideas, be inspired and do your research before you start, not during your renovation.
Have an idea of what you want before organising your measure and quote. Page through bathroom magazines or peruse the web, Instagram and Houzz for design ideas. Have a basic idea of the look you want for your bathroom. Be sure to keep the design flow throughout the entire house. You don’t want a bright and bold bathroom when the rest of your house has a neutral colour scheme. Remember, its important to have an idea of what you like and be sure to seek professional advice for their ideas and be open their advice. It’s important to know what you want prior to starting your renovation as it can be costly to change your mind once work has started.
Seek a professional plan before you buy.
There is no point purchasing your bath or vanity prior to having a professional plan. You want to make the most of your bathroom area without overcrowding the room. It is all too easy to fall in love with items in a showroom. Whilst showrooms are a wonderful way to actually see your potential item in place, remember these showrooms have only one or two walls, which creates an appearance of space that you may not have in your bathroom. Your bathroom has four walls, door and a ceiling. Be sure to organise an appointment with a bathroom renovation specialist who will come out and measure your bathroom and discuss your renovation ideas. We bathroom specialists renovate bathrooms day in day out, and have a wealth of ideas and experience that we can share with you to help you make the most of your bathroom space and create stunning features.
Do not overlook the importance of waterproofing.
The bathroom is a room in the house where DIY is a “no go”, even if you are quite handy. Waterproofing is integral. There is simply no point in spending thousands on your bathroom renovation, to only have a leak occur that causes water damage. When a shower leaks, it is not always immediately obvious. Showers can leak for years creating timber damage and attracting white ants, before the owners of the home become aware of it. It is imperative to use a reputable bathroom renovation specialist that will do the job from start to finish. Whilst a bathroom is a small room, it requires a number of different trades to complete the job. It is all too common to have one tradesperson blame the one before him should problems occur. A bathroom renovation specialist, will have a team of tradesmen who have worked together for years and follow each other seamlessly.
Don’t overcrowd the room.
No other item quite makes a statement in a bathroom like a freestanding bath, however, this style of bath does not suit all bathroom spaces. The same can be said for double vanities. Yes they’re practical, but be sure that your bathroom space can accomodate a larger sized vanity. Having a plan drawn will give you an idea of what size bath and vanity will work best. Thankfully, there are many modern baths and vanities that come in a variety of sizes and styles to suit all bathroom spaces. Remember, the more floor space you make visible, will create the effect of your bathroom appearing larger, don’t overcrowd the room. Wall mount vanities in particular, are a fantastic way to show off more floor space.
Have ample storage space.
Be sure to plan for enough storage space. Nothing spoils a newly renovated bathroom more than having toiletries crowding your vanity, bath and shower floor. We have many storage and space saving ideas. Recessed shaving cabinets are a fantastic way to store toiletries and appear to be a large mirror alone, avoiding crowding the vanity area. Shower niches are innovative way to add a feature to your bathroom and keep your shower toiletries off the floor and avoid the bumps and scrapes that are incurred from traditional shelving.
Design Vs Plumbing.
It may seem like a great idea to move the location of your bath, shower or toilet, but remember moving these items means relocating the plumbing. It is not anywhere near as easy as moving furniture around. Relocating plumbing is a way to perfectly redesign a poorly designed bathroom layout. Be sure however, to discuss this with your bathroom renovator and weigh up the expense. Relocating bathroom plumbing will add to your bathroom renovation budget. Weigh the cost of your wants and needs. If your current bathroom layout works, simply retrofit your bathroom.
Windows & ventilation.
Many bathrooms still contain a traditional small window, which limits the natural light that flows into the bathroom and airflow. Having good natural light and airflow within your bathroom reduces mould. Imagine spending your time and money on your bathroom to have it marred by unsightly mould. If your window is small, consider expanding to a larger window, installing a skylight or be sure to invest in a good exhaust system.
Colour schemes & styles.
Stick with classic themes. A bathroom renovation is a considerable investment that you don’t want to date in just a few years time. Just as fashion trends come and go, so do trends in home decor. Only it’s a lot more expensive to change your bathroom tile colour than it is to change your wardrobe. When deciding your colour scheme and choosing your fittings, stick to classic colour schemes and styles that are timeless such as whites and neutrals. You can always add a particular style or colour with decor and towels to your bathroom and change these to suit the latest trends.
Functionality Vs Beauty.
Be sure the items you choose are practical not just beautiful. For example: Deep free standing baths are simply gorgeous, but all styles may not be practical for bathing small children as they’re too deep. Or you may have picked the perfect pendant light that will look simply stunning in your bathroom, but will it give you the light you need for shaving or makeup application? Another typical conundrum is vanity basins. Above counter basins are very much on trend and do look amazing, however, they’re not easy for small children to use. When renovating your bathroom, it is important to take into consideration all individuals who will use the bathroom, its functionality as well as its look.
