Without doubt, one of the most common problems almost everyone experiences in their bathrooms from time to time, is mould. Especially in the shower recess. Mould is the dreaded fungus that we try and avoid, often to no avail. Walk into any supermarket cleaning aisle and you will find an abundance of products that sole purpose is to help us eradicate this nasty problem. However, most of these products fail to do anything other than remove the colour of the mould, just “bleaching it”, so it reappears again and again, requiring us to use these expensive, toxic products constantly.

Mould can completely ruin an entirely beautiful bathroom. It immediately makes our bathroom look dirty, although this isn’t necessarily the case. Mould does not discriminate, it effects old and new bathrooms alike. Once mould is present, it can be quite difficult to completely remove. We can clean, scrub, and blast it with bleach, only to find it rear its ugly head again just a short time later.

Ensuring good ventilation to your shower will reduce mould.

Cleaning our bathrooms on a weekly basis goes a long way to help us avoid mould in our bathrooms. Although, even the cleanest of clean bathrooms are still prone to mould in the shower recess as it is an area that is wet on a daily basis. Mould loves damp, dark and humid places. The shower recess is the perfect environment for it to thrive.

As the saying goes, “prevention is better than cure”. So just how do we avoid mould in our shower recess in the first place?

There are a few steps we can take to avoid mould in our bathrooms. Ensuring that our bathrooms are well lit and ventilated is one. This can be done by opening our bathroom blinds and windows. Installing an exhaust fan is a must. Cleaning our bathrooms on a weekly basis is another that we’ve previously mentioned. Whilst these steps are enough to avoid mould in the rest of our bathrooms, they are not enough to prevent mould in our shower recesses. This is because our showers are constantly wet. Even in a one person household, with the shower being used just once a day, the shower recess will almost never reach a completely dry state.

So our shower recesses are almost always damp, hot and humid, and these are the perfect conditions for mould to grow.

The best way to avoid mould in our shower recess, is to simply leave our shower doors open after showering!

Now this may sound almost too obvious. However, we all like things to be clean and tidy and closed doors and screens look nice and neat. We lift our toilet seat, then we close it. We open a vanity drawer, then we close it. Although closing our shower screen door may look neat, when doing so, it also encourages our fungal foe to grow.

Many shower screens are now designed to pivot both inward and outward, so leaving the shower door open need not intrude on the bathroom area. If your shower screen does open out into your bathroom area, or should you feel it looks untidy leaving it open, have it open for just part of the day. Leaving your shower door open ensures that your shower recess can be ventilated by your open window or air conditioning and helps it to dry out and removes the humidity from the area. Performing this step alone, will go that extra mile to avoiding mould that our shower recess needs.
