Choosing a shower head for your bathroom renovation was once a simple task. In fact it wasn’t considered a task at all as there were very few different types and designs from which to choose. Today, it’s a very different story. The humble shower can now provide a spa like experience in our very own home with rainfall showers, massage jets and even LED lighting to help us relax and unwind. The latest shower technology can control water pressure, spray and also temperature, ensuring the ultimate shower each and every time. There are now so many fantastic shower head (or rose) combinations and designs that not only provide a relaxing and rejuvenating experience, but add to the overall character and design of the bathroom, some even becoming a major feature.

Generally speaking there are two major types of shower heads: fixed (either to the wall or ceiling) and hand held. From this distinction there are many variations of type, such as concealed or rail showers, and water sprays that include rainfall, waterfall, massage, combination systems, body jets and even foot jets.

So where does one begin when choosing a shower head?

Largely the needs of the individuals who are using the shower will determine the type of shower head that should be chosen. Especially if those individuals have large height variances such as children and those with mobility limitations and may use a shower chair, in which case, a rail shower with an adjustable hand held shower rose is an ideal choice. This type of shower is by far the most convenient and universally suitable installation as it can be adjusted to a height to suit all individuals and has a hand held attachment that is perfect for personal use and cleaning the shower recess.

What type of shower stall design you are using is important to consider before purchasing your shower head. Consider the water pressure that will be generated, how it is projected and how wide it is projected. Rainfall showers tend to have a wider water projection than that of standard shower heads and the spray from body jets need to be contained by the shower panel or enclosure.

Efficiency ratings should not be ignored. The flow rate of a shower head is how much water is projected in litres per minute. The efficiency rating of shower heads vary and can make a difference to large families, especially those with teens. Remember, this rating is measured with the water saver installed, so should this be removed, the flow rate of the shower head will increase and will likely void the manufacture warranty.

Cleaning is a factor that should also be considered. Hand held showers make cleaning the shower recess such a breeze to clean and are particularly useful for those who use the shower to wash their furry friends.

Budget is major determining factor when choosing a shower head. Combination shower systems, rainfall showers, hand held shower heads with various spray settings and thermostat systems can be pricey. Have an overall idea of what it is you want in your bathroom and to what proportion of the budget you have for tapware.

Last but not least, style should be considered. What type, design and finish appeals to you when searching pinterest, paging through magazines or visiting bathroom showrooms? What style best suits your tile choice, bath and vanity? There are no hard and fast rules with design, however, square shower heads tend to suit more contemporary bathrooms whilst round shower heads are suitable for both modern and traditional styles.
