When shopping for bathroom vanities, it doesn’t take long to become overwhelmed by the choices available. Not to mention that the P.C items (prime cost items) being your bath, vanity, toilet, tiles and tapware are largely what determine the overall cost of your bathroom renovation. Trying to balance style and budget, wants and needs can be frustrating, to say the least.

To add to the pressure of choosing the right vanity for your bathroom renovation, is that vanities today are more than simply storage items. Read our article for storage ideas in your bathroom. Vanities now come in a vast array of styles, colours and finishes, which makes the bathroom vanity a major component of bathroom decor. In fact, the perfectly chosen vanity can become the main feature of the bathroom.

Wall hung vanities are extremely popular, as they not only look great but also add to the all important appearance of space within the bathroom by showing off more floor area. They in addition make cleaning the bathroom a whole lot easier as there are no legs to dust, polish and mop around.

Despite their popularity, they do have a couple of disadvantages. Wall hung vanities require extra plumbing moves as the plumbing needs to be relocated from the floor to the wall behind the vanity to hide the plumbing. Wall hung vanities can be a little more expensive to purchase as they require a stronger backing to be mounted on the wall. In addition, many feel that wall hung vanities do not offer the same amount of storage as floor standing vanities. So if the budget for the bathroom renovation is tight and storage is a priority, as it is in most bathrooms, some homeowners feel that a wall hung vanity is just not worth the extra expense, no matter how great they may look. A fantastic alternative to a wall hung vanity is a custom plinth supported vanity. This is where a floor standing vanity is chosen, its legs are removed and a plinth is built to support the vanity and hide the existing plumbing for the basins from the floor. The plinth is then tiled in either the same tile that is used for the floor or alternatively the same tile that is used for the wall, creating a clean, contemporary and seamless finish that shows off extra floor space just as a wall hung vanity would. Depending on your individual taste, the plinth can either blend in or stand out as a feature. In fact, tiling the plinth in the same tile as the floor, makes the plinth almost invisible. Having a plinth supported vanity gives homeowners the advantage of the storage space provided by a floor standing vanity with the contemporary look of a wall hung vanity. The best of both worlds so to speak.

Plumbing can still be accessed from inside the vanity as it would be with traditional floor standing vanities. Cleaning the bathroom floor is as simple as a quick swipe as there are no legs or kickboard to collect dust or hair.

So if your bathroom renovation budget is a little tight, or if you simply prefer to have the extra storage space that a floor standing vanity provides, why not consider a custom plinth supported vanity for your bathroom?
