Tiles:
When using tiles as your splashback, you are limited only by your imagination. Tiles work well with both traditional and contemporary designs and the colour, style and size options are endless. Textured tiles and mosaics make an incredible statement and can become the main feature of the kitchen. Herringbone and subway tile are both quite popular at present.
It is important to keep maintenance in mind when choosing tile for the splashback. The finish of the tile needs to be easy to clean away oil, food and water marks. Be aware, the smaller the tile, the more grout joins there will be to clean. Consider choosing a coloured grout to blend in or contrast with the tile colour to avoid stained grout.

Glass:
Glass splashbacks are extremely popular and create a contemporary feel in the kitchen. Colour can be matched to almost any paint colour, including metallics. The reflective quality of the glass adds to the appearance of space within the kitchen. Glass is incredibly easy to maintain requiring only a glass cleaner to wipe away mess.
Stone:
Both natural and engineered stone are popular choices for kitchen benchtops. When choosing a stone benchtop, consider using the same stone for your splashback. Using stone on your splashback with undercabinet lighting, creates a statement like no other. A disadvantage of natural stone is that it does require annual sealing to protect it from staining and special products for everyday cleaning. This however is not the case for engineered stone such as quartz. Quartz is increasingly used in kitchens for benchtops and splashbacks for its maintenance free durability, colour and design options.

Mirrors:
Using mirrors to create the appearance of space is well known. Mirrored splashbacks are safety glass treated as are glass splashbacks. They work well in almost any contemporary kitchen design, but particularly useful in those that are smaller in size and those that mirror a view from the outside. Mirrored splashbacks, like glass are easy to maintain.
