Style

Unless you’re undetaking a complete renovation of your entire home, the overall style and colour scheme of your home will largely dictate the style and colour scheme of your new kitchen. This is especially true with open floor plan designs. A traditional style kitchen will look extremely out of place right next to an ultra modern lounge room.

The seemingly endless array of colour choices can then be reduced greatly by the style chosen for your kitchen. Traditional style kitchens use traditional colour schemes such as whites, creams, French greys, olive greens and timber. Whereas modern style kitchens tend to use bright whites and the addition of bolder type colours.

Decide on your focal point

Choose what part of your kitchen you want to emphasise as a feature. Do you want your cabinets to be your main feature with colour or with style? Will you choose a natural stone benchtop such as marble or a bold coloured Quartz and make that your main feature? Will you use bright coloured mosaics or glass for your splashback? Or will your kitchen cabinetry and benchtops be of a neutral colour and your appliances be your feature? Once your focal point is decided upon, other choices will fall into place.

Size

The size of your kitchen needs to be taken into consideration when choosing a colour scheme. Remember that smaller sized rooms benefit from lighter colours as these help to create a feeling of space and light within a room. Whereas dark bolder type colours if used in large amounts, will make a small room appear even smaller.

Those with a larger kitchen area which features plenty of natural light can take advantage of darker shades if they so desire.

Cabinet Colours

Kitchen cabinets take up a predominant space within a kitchen, so it is safe to start with choosing your colours here. For smaller sized kitchens these should be a light coloured neutral that blends into the wall to create the appearance of space. Colour can always be added with appliances, backsplash or with other decor.

Kitchen wall cabinets and base cabinets need not be of the exact same colour. A recent trend to having wall and base cabinets either a slight variation in colour or a complete contrast to the wall cabinets to create a bolder statement is quite effective regardless of kitchen style, be traditional or modern, but is much more common in modern style kitchens. Having wall and base cabinets of the same light neutral colour offset by a contrasting island is also quite effective.

Don’t rule out an all white kitchen. All white or off white neutral toned kitchens are classic, timeless and suits both modern and traditional styles. They are anything but boring and will not date as quickly as other colour schemes. It is easy and inexpensive to add colour to these neutral coloured kitchens with bright appliances, plants or other decor and these colours can be changed as easily and as often as your change your couch pillows and throws.

Benchtops

As benchtops (or countertops) are at eye level, they occupy a large amount of the visual space of your kitchen. Be sure to take samples of your cabinet colour with you to help choose a colour and finish that will compliment your cabinets. Be aware that if choosing a natural stone benchtop such as granite or marble, the sample you choose in the showroom will differ slightly to what is delivered as it is “natural”.

Flooring

Flooring has a huge influence on how your colour scheme will appear. Wooden floors add warmth to a room whereas tiles create a more contemporary finish and if light in colour add to the appearance of space.

Appliances

Stainless steel and white were once the finishes of choice for kitchen appliances. Today, homeowners are using bolder coloured appliances. Fridges, ovens, range hoods and dishwashers can be found in black, red and other bold colours, although stainless steel, white and black are still far more commonly found in the traditional appliance stores. These appliances do not have to include your big ticket items. You can start small with bright coloured benchtop appliances such as toasters and kettles. Most of these smaller type appliances have a chrome or stainless steel trimming that blend in nicely with your larger appliances.

Even if you have no intention to sell your home in the future, be wary of choosing what’s in vogue purely because it is popular at the current time. Colours that may be on trend now may create a contemporary feel to your newly renovated kitchen, but could see it date in just a few short years.
