The bathroom may be one of the smallest rooms in the home however, is a complex room to renovate. Renovating your bathroom and getting it right, not only increases the value of your home but can have a positive impact on your everyday life.

The goal when doing a bathroom renovation is to achieve a bathroom that not only looks great, but one that is functional. Knowing what to consider and where to start helps to ensure that your bathroom renovation goes smoothly.

Let’s look at some of our bathroom renovation tips:

Who will be using the bathroom?

Is it a bathroom for guests, a powder room, an ensuite or is it a family bathroom? If there are young children using the bathroom, the inclusion of a bath is likely to be a top priority. Although above counter bowls look incredible, very young children have difficulty using them. If an elderly family member will be using the bathroom then an easy access shower recess and grab rails may need to be considered. An ensuite bathroom for a couple may benefit by having a double bowl vanity. A family bathroom will require adequate storage of toiletries. This is the starting point of renovating any bathroom. Knowing exactly what is required to meet the needs of those who will be using the bathroom will ensure the bathrooms functionality. See our blog post for Designing a Family Bathroom.

Making the most of your space:

Is space limited? If so, consider what it is you really want in your bathroom. We have all looked in awe upon those large bathrooms with stunning free standing baths and double bowl vanities, but lets face it, not all bathrooms are large enough to have both. If a free standing bath is a must have, consider if a smaller shower recess will work for you or if you can store all your bathroom items in a smaller sized vanity with a recessed shaving cabinet to hold extra storage. There are many options for homeowners with smaller sized bathrooms, but it certainly helps to determine what your must haves are prior to starting your bathroom renovation.

Bathroom Layout:

Are you happy with your bathrooms current layout or do you need to relocate the plumbing? Careful consideration needs to be given prior to committing to moving around your bathroom items. It is not quite as simple as pushing your furniture from one side of the room to another as you would in your lounge room. Relocating plumbing adds considerable expense to your bathroom renovation, so if your budget is limited and your current bathroom layout is functional, leaving the plumbing in its place will save you an unnecessary expense. If the decision is made to relocate your plumbing, be sure to get a quote from your bathroom renovator detailing this expense. See our blog post for Ways to cut the cost of your bathroom renovation.

Style & Colour Scheme:

Unless you are renovating your entire home or building a new one, the style and colour scheme of your bathroom will flow from other parts of your home. While the latest styles and colours are tempting, sticking with classic colour schemes is preferable as they do not date. Use towels, candles and other such decor to add the latest colours to your bathroom. It is much cheaper to replace this type of interchangeable decor when pink or purple is no longer trendy than it is to retile an entire wall. See our blog post for Bathroom & Kitchen Materials & Colours that won’t date.

Storage:

No bathroom is completely functional without adequate storage. Whilst most will use the vanity as their only storage area, incorporating a shaving cabinet in your bathroom renovation is an extremely sensible idea. Mirrored shaving cabinets were constantly mentioned come bathroom week on The Block 2018 whenever bathroom week came around. “Face level storage” was high on the judges list of bathroom must haves and it is no wonder why. A mirrored shaving cabinet takes advantage of the space used for the bathroom mirror whilst adding valuable storage space in what is considered one of the smallest rooms in the home. Not just another storage space, but one in a truly convenient area, right in front of our face reflection, hence the name “face level storage”. Shaving cabinets are also perfect for keeping items out of reach from younger members of the family, making it a more childproof space.

Shaving cabinets can be bought in store with decorative shelving that match the vanity. Alternatively, they can be custom made to perfectly suit your storage needs, size of vanity and completly recessed into the wall cavity to appear as a mirror alone, which avoids adding bulk to the vanity area creating a more streamlined finish. See our blog post on Bathroom Storage Ideas for more inspiration.

Quality Items & Features:

Having a single feature in a bathroom turns it from ordinary to extraordinary. A feature does not necessarily have to burn a hole in your pocket. You may decide to make your free standing bath or vanity with a decorative mirror your feature. Perhaps an entire feature wall with a contrasting tile is more your style. It need not be an expensive specialty tile to be effective. A tile in a contrasting colour creates an stunning feature. A feature wall can be set behind a bath, the vanity or even in the shower recess. Perhaps an entire feature wall is too much for your bathroom. The entire wall need not be used. Even a vertical row or two of tiles makes a smaller bathroom pop. Additionally a niche set in a shower recess or above a bath lit with LED strip lighting is an extremely effective feature. Options for features are limited only by your imagination. See our blog post Creating a Feature in your Bathroom for more advice.

Other Considerations:

Quality tapware avoids unnecessary plumbing expense in the future, so whilst it is not necessary to buy from the top of the range, quality tapware will provide piece of mind.

Hardwired heated towel rails and electric under tile floor heating is a great option for those chilly months. See our blog post on Benefits of Bathroom Electric Floor Heating for more information.

Ensure adequate ventilation so as to avoid mould spoiling your newly renovated bathroom.

There are many lighting options for bathrooms, above mirror, back-lit mirrors, under cabinet lighting, downlighting and LED strip lighting. Be sure to consider your bathroom lighting prior to renovating to take full advantage of your lighting options. See our blog post on Lighting Options for your Bathroom for more lighting ideas.
